A driver was killed early Friday morning after a car slammed into a bridge just south of Milwaukee's Mitchell International Airport, a crash caught on video in thick fog along one of the city's key airport corridors.
The single-vehicle wreck happened around 12:30 a.m. near Howell and College avenues, where the car ended up pressed against a bridge in heavy fog. Authorities have not said whether anyone else was hurt, and the investigation remains active as officials work to piece together what led up to the impact.
Video from the scene shows the vehicle crumpled against the bridge in low-visibility conditions. The Milwaukee County Medical Examiner confirmed one fatality in the crash, according to WISN, which reported that police had not released additional information as of early Friday morning.
Where It Happened
The crash took place along the stretch of Howell and College avenues that skirts the southern approach to Mitchell Airport, an area where ramps and bridges run along and under airport property. Milwaukee Mitchell International Airport lists its main address as 5300 South Howell Avenue, putting the scene on the airport’s southern edge just outside the terminal complex.
What Authorities Say
Investigators have not yet released a suspected cause of the crash or clarified whether anyone besides the driver was in the vehicle. Officials are expected to analyze physical evidence from the scene and review any available video to reconstruct what happened in the foggy early-morning conditions.
The Milwaukee County Medical Examiner’s Office confirmed the fatality, and WISN reports that the station has reached out to police for further comment. The victim’s identity has not yet been released.
