San Jose started out clear and cool at about 52°F at Mineta San Jose International Airport this morning, but commuters should not get too attached to the blue skies. Pockets of patchy fog are likely before 8 AM and should clear by mid-morning, with sunshine pushing the daytime high to around 77°F. Inland neighborhoods will heat up further later in the week, while the coast and bayside spots stay cooler and breezier.
Foggy Commute, Sunny Afternoon
Patchy fog is expected to settle into low-lying neighborhoods and valley approaches early, briefly cutting visibility and potentially slowing the morning drive. Once the sun breaks through mid to late morning, inland areas should climb into the mid- to upper 70s, making for a mild spring afternoon. A light jacket will feel right for the early drive, and it is worth giving yourself extra time and braking room on foggy on-ramps.
Afternoon Winds And Rougher Water
South-southwest winds pick up this afternoon, generally around 1 to 10 mph, with gusts up to about 18 mph inland and stronger gusts near the airport and exposed ridges. SFO could see gusts near 24 to 25 knots. Conditions on the Bay and along the Monterey-area coast will be choppier. The National Weather Service has issued Small Craft Advisories for the waters from Pigeon Point to Point Pinos beginning at 3 PM today until tomorrow, and swells of 8 to 12 feet are possible late in the week. Boaters should avoid the most exposed areas and make sure any loose gear is tied down.
Weekend Cooldown And Light Rain Odds
The late-week warmup starts to back off on Friday, May 1, as a Pacific low nudges the marine layer farther inland. That will bring cooler conditions for the weekend and a chance of drizzle on Sunday morning, May 3. Passing light showers may increase Sunday night and linger next Monday and Tuesday, May 4 and 5, although forecast models still point to only light rainfall totals. If you have outdoor plans late Sunday into early next week, keep an umbrella handy just in case.
