Firefighters pulled an unconscious woman from a first-floor apartment after a kitchen fire in Fort Lauderdale on Friday afternoon, according to neighbors and emergency responders. Paramedics rushed her to a nearby hospital, and crews also rescued two cats from the unit.

Responders Race to the 800 Block of Northeast 18th Avenue

Fort Lauderdale Police and Fire Rescue units responded to reports of smoke and flames in the 800 block of Northeast 18th Avenue, where they found heavy smoke pouring from a first-floor apartment. Crews located an unconscious woman in the living room and paramedics transported her to a local hospital, as reported by WSVN.

Smoke Inhalation Carries Hidden Toxins

Smoke from burning household materials can release hydrogen cyanide and other toxic gases that may quickly incapacitate people even when external burns are limited. Emergency medical literature and official labeling note that hydroxocobalamin is an antidote used in suspected cyanide poisoning from fires, according to the Cyanokit label on DailyMed.

Neighbors Sound Alarm as Crews Work to Revive Victim

“They did a really good job with resuscitation,” Fort Lauderdale Fire Rescue Assistant Fire Chief Tim Heiser said, praising the crew for the rescue effort. Neighbor Brianna Oliveira told WSVN she was outside when she smelled smoke, ran to warn the woman, and later learned that the victim’s two cats had been saved. Heiser added that crews administered medicine on scene to help remove cyanide from the victim’s blood and that she was more alert by the time she reached the rescue unit.

The cause of the fire remains under investigation, and Fort Lauderdale officials have not released further details about the victim’s condition. The city and Fire Rescue did not immediately provide additional information about the apartment or the victims.
