A quiet Fort Worth block turned tragic Sunday afternoon when a 5-year-old girl riding a scooter was hit by a vehicle and later died, according to police.
The collision happened in a residential neighborhood and left the child critically injured. Investigators say the driver immediately stopped, stayed at the scene and began performing CPR until medics arrived. The girl was rushed to a hospital, where she died from her injuries.
Police account of the crash
As reported by WFAA, Fort Worth police say the crash took place around 3 p.m. Sunday on the 1900 block of Portland Street. Investigators said the child rode her scooter into the path of a vehicle, then ended up under a parked car after the impact.
Officers said the driver stayed on scene and started CPR on the girl until first responders took over. She was transported to a hospital, where she was later pronounced dead. Detectives say they are still piecing together exactly how the incident unfolded.
Scooter injuries are rising nationally
Federal data and industry reports have been sounding the alarm on injuries tied to scooters and other micromobility devices, which have climbed in recent years. The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission has documented a notable rise in emergency department visits involving e-scooters and e-bikes, and an industry analysis found ER trips increased again in 2024.
CPSC data show many of those injuries involve the head or face, a reminder of why helmets are so often stressed in safety guidance.
What pediatric experts recommend
Pediatricians and safety advocates have been warning that children are getting caught up in this trend. The American Academy of Pediatrics has highlighted rising e-scooter injuries among kids and urged age limits, protective gear and safer riding environments that keep young riders away from vehicle traffic.
Recent medical research has linked skipping helmets to more severe head trauma. Findings highlighted in EurekAlert underscore calls for adult supervision, consistent helmet use and steering children toward low-traffic areas such as parks, trails or fenced driveways.
Investigation ongoing
Fort Worth detectives say their investigation into Sunday’s fatal crash remains active. Officials have not released additional information about the driver or whether any charges are being considered.
