Yesterday's late-morning encounter outside a Frenchtown Township hotel ended in gunfire, leaving one person dead and a Monroe County sheriff's deputy on administrative leave while outside investigators try to piece together what happened.
According to the Monroe County Sheriff's Office, the deputy confronted an individual armed with a knife near North Dixie Highway and Interstate 75 on Sunday. The deputy reported using a Taser twice before firing two shots. Emergency responders and the deputy provided medical aid, but the person died at the scene, officials said.

Deputies were dispatched at 11:08 a.m. on a report of a person who had "threatened a citizen while soliciting money," according to CBS News. The Monroe County Sheriff's Office told CBS that when the deputy made contact, the individual had a knife. The deputy reported deploying a Taser twice and then firing two gunshots that struck the person.
Officials have not said whether the knife was being waved or raised when the shots were fired, leaving a key detail in the use-of-force encounter still unanswered.

WILX and the sheriff's office said the shooting occurred at the TownePlace Suites by Marriott along North Dixie Highway. The hotel lists its address on Marriott as 1440 North Dixie Highway.
Frenchtown Township Fire Department, Monroe Community Ambulance, and Monroe police also responded. Local outlets reported that the deputy began emergency first aid before the person was pronounced dead at the scene. The identity of the deceased has not been released.
