San Jose started today under mostly cloudy skies and a noticeable chill, with Mineta San Jose International Airport reporting about 52°F early in the morning. A weak cold front slid through overnight, dropping light showers that left only patchy wet spots on lower-lying streets. Skies are expected to clear by mid-morning, with sunshine helping temperatures climb to around 66°F by afternoon.
Afternoon Winds And Marine Advisories
Northwest winds will pick up this afternoon, generally 10 to 15 mph with gusts near 20 mph, which will leave conditions on the water on the choppy side. A Small Craft Advisory is in effect from 3 PM to 9 PM PDT today, for San Francisco Bay north of the Bay Bridge, and another advisory runs through 3 AM PDT tomorrow, for portions of Monterey Bay. Forecasters are also flagging much stronger gusts on Friday: 40 to 50 mph in the North Bay interior mountains and 30 to 40 mph in parts of the East Bay Hills and the Santa Cruz Mountains, so it is a good time to secure loose outdoor items and rethink any nonessential water trips, according to the National Weather Service.
Commute And Outdoor Plans
Bridges and other exposed routes are likely to feel those stronger crosswinds this afternoon, so cyclists and drivers of high-profile vehicles should take it slow and stay alert. Inland neighborhoods will see more sun and milder air, with most spots reaching the mid-60s. Tonight looks clear and cool, with lows near 41°F. If you are heading out this evening, expect it to be breezy early on, then gradually calmer overnight.
Weekend Warmup
By Friday and into the weekend, high pressure builds in and offshore flow takes over, flipping the switch from cool to downright warm. Highs are expected to reach about 77°F on Friday, then jump to around 85°F on both Saturday and Sunday in inland parts of the valley. It will be a sharp turnaround after this brief cool snap.
Bottom line: light rain and breezy conditions early Thursday give way to sunshine and a warm weekend. Mariners and anyone traveling on exposed routes should pay attention to the Small Craft Advisories and lock down loose outdoor items before Friday’s stronger winds arrive.
