Portland woke up doing its best late-winter impersonation on Friday, April 17, 2026, with cloudy skies and about 45°F at PDX. Sheltered pockets in the Willamette Valley and Cascade foothills stayed cold enough for frost, with some rural spots briefly near freezing before the sun gets to work. Most of the metro is still on track to climb into the low 60s this afternoon under mostly sunny skies.
Morning Frost and Freeze Alerts
Freeze Warnings and Frost Advisories remain in effect through 9 a.m. PDT Friday, April 17 for the southern Willamette Valley, Cascade foothills and the Upper Hood River Valley, while most of the Portland-Vancouver metro should stay a few degrees warmer. Low 30s are possible in the coldest hollows, with upper 30s to low 40s in town before the warmup kicks in. Today's high should top out near 61°F with light north winds, according to National Weather Service Portland.
Small, Real-World Impacts
Gardeners will want to baby the greens a little longer this morning. Cover or move tender plants, especially potted ones on decks and in exposed beds, which are most at risk from the chill. Early commuters might run into frosty windshields and a bit of patchy fog in low-lying spots, but widespread travel headaches are not expected. If you are biking or walking, expect a brisk start and plan on layers you can peel off once the sun does its job.
Weekend Warm-Up
A more noticeable warm-up rolls in Saturday, April 18 and Sunday, April 19, with inland highs near 72°F on Saturday and around 73°F on Sunday. There is only a slight chance of showers late Saturday night into early Sunday, roughly between 11 p.m. Saturday and 5 a.m. Sunday, and most of the weekend looks dry and mild, per KPTV. With more sun and fewer clouds, it is shaping up to be solid weather for yard work, park time or finally testing out that patio furniture.
Next Week: Rain Chances Return
Forecast confidence drops a notch heading into Monday, April 20 through Wednesday, April 22 as a large upper-level low could wobble off the northern California and southern Oregon coasts and tweak the pattern. Showers become more likely Monday into Tuesday if that low nudges closer to the coast, so it is worth checking the forecast again before locking in outdoor plans. For now, expect cooler, cloudier conditions early next week with periods of light rain possible.
Marine And Boaters
Offshore waters are mostly benign today with seas below 5 feet, but a Small Craft Advisory is in effect for portions of the outer waters until 9 a.m. PDT Friday, April 17 and conditions could pick up over the weekend. Seas are expected to build to around 6 to 7 feet on Saturday, April 18 with a 20 to 30% chance of small-craft-level gusts offshore, so boaters should secure loose gear and check local forecasts, according to National Weather Service Portland.
We wrote about a similar frosty start earlier in April; see our April 7 Hoodline story for background: earlier frosty wake-up.
