A man is in critical condition after being found badly injured in the middle of a Southwest Side roadway early Friday, in the kind of scene no overnight driver expects to stumble on. Around 1 a.m., a passing driver spotted the victim lying on Medina Base Road near the Loop 410 access road and called for help. Police say the man suffered serious head trauma and a broken leg and was rushed to a hospital. Investigators have not yet said how he ended up in the street.
How Police Say The Scene Unfolded
According to KABB, a driver turned onto Medina Base Road near Southwest Loop 410 and saw the man lying in the roadway, stopped to check on him and then called 911. The station reports the scene was along the same stretch near the Loop 410 access road and notes that images from the response were credited to SBG San Antonio. Investigators say they are still working to determine whether a vehicle struck the victim before he was found.
Victim's Injuries And The Investigation
KSAT reports that San Antonio police said the man was transported with “serious” head injuries and a broken leg. Officials told the outlet they believe the case may be a hit-and-run, although they have not released additional details about how those injuries occurred. The victim has not been publicly identified.
Why This Stretch Of Road Keeps Coming Up
Medina Base Road by Loop 410 has a recent history of deadly and serious crashes. The San Antonio Express-News detailed a 2021 hit-and-run on the same corridor that killed a 15-year-old and later led to a prison sentence for the driver. That reporting noted that parts of the road lack sidewalks, a factor in previous incidents. Local coverage and community complaints have repeatedly pointed to limited pedestrian infrastructure on parts of the corridor as a lingering safety concern.
Case Still Open As Detectives Dig In
The police department has not put out a timeline for when more information will be released, KSAT reports. Authorities say they will provide updates as investigators gather more details and work to piece together what happened before the driver found the man in the roadway.
