The Monday morning commute along a busy stretch of 7th Street Northwest took a hard turn when a traffic dustup escalated into an armed confrontation, according to D.C. police. A Maryland driver was arrested after a gun was allegedly pulled, rattling motorists in the area. No one was hurt, and investigators are still piecing together what set off the dispute.
Officers were called shortly before 10 a.m. to the 1700 block of 7th Street Northwest for reports of an armed assault, where the victim was following the suspect’s vehicle. Police identified the suspect as 57-year-old David Anthony Jennings of Brandywine, Maryland. A firearm was recovered at the scene, and Jennings was taken into custody without incident. He is charged with assault with a dangerous weapon, possession of an unregistered firearm and unregistered ammunition, and carrying a pistol without a license. The investigation is ongoing, according to WJLA.
Arrest and Charges
Police said the victim had been driving behind Jennings when a traffic dispute broke out. During that confrontation, Jennings allegedly pointed a handgun at the other driver, according to officers. They located Jennings nearby, recovered the weapon and placed him under arrest. No injuries were reported. “The victim was driving behind the suspect when a traffic dispute broke out,” police told WJLA.
Legal Next Steps
The counts against Jennings are being handled as criminal charges that would move through D.C.’s court system if prosecutors decide to pursue them. Authorities are expected to review the evidence and make decisions on arraignment, bond and any additional charges as the investigation continues.
