An afternoon commute turned terrifying near the I-41 and Capitol Drive interchange in Wauwatosa on Tuesday when a driver opened fire on another vehicle during what police are calling a road-rage incident. No one was hurt, but one car was left with bullet damage and nearby drivers got a jarring reminder of how quickly tempers can explode on a busy freeway.
What Police Say Happened
According to a news release, officers were called to the area of I-41 and Capitol Drive around 3:10 p.m. for a report of shots fired. Investigators say one vehicle hit several construction barrels, then sideswiped another car. The driver of the striking vehicle then fired multiple rounds, hitting the other vehicle twice, as reported by WISN 12 News.
By the time officers arrived, the shooter was gone. The driver in the vehicle that was hit stayed at the scene and was not injured.
A Notoriously Tricky Interchange
The multi-level I-41 and Capitol Drive interchange has already been on the radar for safety concerns. The state signed off on a multi-million-dollar improvement project in recent years to fix structural and traffic problems at the complex junction, according to FOX6 Milwaukee. Drivers and engineers have long warned that the tight design and heavy traffic can set the stage for crashes and heated confrontations.
Police Looking For Witnesses And Video
