This morning in Hamtramck turned frightening fast when a student was reportedly forced into a vehicle at gunpoint while waiting at a school bus stop. Classmates quickly jumped into action, using social media and cellphone location data to help track the student's whereabouts. Police later found the vehicle, pulled it over, and took a suspect into custody. School officials say the student is now safe. The abduction was reported near the intersections of Edwin and Pulaski and Edwin and Brombach in Hamtramck, and the district says it is working with its transportation partners to tighten safety measures during student pick-up and drop-off.
In a Facebook "Community Alert & Update," Hamtramck Public Schools Board President Abdulmalik Algahaim told families that "The student is safe, and at this time there is no indication of any ongoing threat to the community," according to ClickOnDetroit. Algahaim said several students saw what happened and "were able to help track the student's location through social media and cell phone information."
Students' quick thinking helped guide the police to a stop
The arrest comes during a tense week for Hamtramck families, with police already investigating separate attempted luring incidents near bus stops. Those included reports of a man in a black Chevy Camaro trying to lure children with candy, as reported by WXYZ. Those earlier incidents had already prompted closer scrutiny of routes and pickup points as investigators followed up on leads.
District response and safety plans
Algahaim said the district has been in contact with its transportation partners and will be taking additional safety precautions during student pick-up and drop-off, per ClickOnDetroit. Police and school officials have not released the suspect's name or any potential charges, and the district has said it will provide more information as it becomes available.
Anyone with information is asked to call Det. Crachiola at 313-876-7823 or Hamtramck police at 313-876-7803, according to WXYZ. The district is urging parents and guardians to stay alert at bus stops and to have students travel in groups whenever possible.
