Two Friday traffic stops in Hercules ended with one driver in cuffs on suspicion of dealing hard drugs and another booked after officers say they found him drunk behind the wheel with a stolen gun in his car, according to police.
According to the Hercules Police Department, officers pulled over a vehicle driven by Lenar Banegasrivas and reported finding methamphetamine, heroin, cocaine and fentanyl packaged for sale, along with a digital scale. Banegasrivas was arrested and booked into the county jail.
In a separate incident, officers say they found a driver, identified as Celeon Waters, asleep behind the wheel at an intersection. Police reported that Waters showed clear signs of intoxication, failed field sobriety tests and registered over the legal limit. A subsequent search of the vehicle turned up a loaded firearm that officers say was stolen, and Waters was booked following further investigation.
Local Enforcement Pattern
The department's post is the latest in a string of public updates on targeted traffic enforcement in Hercules. As reported by Hoodline on officers who sweep 13 illegal guns off city streets, the agency has been spotlighting the recovery of illegal and stolen weapons as part of its effort to tamp down violence.
Fentanyl and Public Safety Backdrop
State and public health officials say fentanyl increasingly shows up mixed with other drugs, raising overdose risks and complicating enforcement, treatment and harm reduction strategies. Gov. Newsom's office has highlighted expanded interdiction operations and large fentanyl seizures across California, and public health research has documented the national rise of synthetic opioids in recent years.
Legal Implications
Possessing controlled substances that are packaged for sale can be prosecuted as a felony under California law, and possession of stolen property, including firearms, can lead to separate felony exposure. Driving under the influence is governed by state DUI statutes. Per Health & Safety Code §11378 and Vehicle Code §23152, prosecutors can pursue drug sale and DUI counts, and receiving stolen property is a crime under Penal Code §496. Anyone charged in these kinds of cases should consult legal counsel and official records for details on specific allegations and penalties.
The Hercules Police Department told followers it will continue monitoring for impaired driving and taking immediate action to prevent dangerous situations, according to its Facebook post. State programs have also expanded naloxone distribution and other harm reduction efforts as part of a broader response to fentanyl, officials note.
