An early-morning tractor-trailer crash on U.S. Highway 83 south of La Pryor killed two people on Wednesday and shut down the stretch of road between La Pryor and Crystal City. The wreck happened around 6:45 a.m. and brought emergency crews from both Uvalde and Zavala counties to the scene. Authorities have not released the victims' names or any suspected cause.
Crash And Emergency Response
The La Pryor Volunteer Fire Department announced on social media that U.S. Highway 83 was closed “until further notice” after the crash, which left two people dead, according to WOAI. Uvalde EMS crews responded to the scene, while Zavala County deputies and Texas Department of Public Safety troopers handled the on-site investigation.
Road Reopened
The La Pryor VFD later reported that the stretch of U.S. 83 between La Pryor and Crystal City had reopened at about 2 p.m. Wednesday, KSAT reported. In a statement to KSAT, the Zavala County Sheriff's Office said a semi-truck and another vehicle were involved.
Investigation Ongoing
No names, possible charges, or cause of the crash have been released as troopers continue their preliminary investigation. State DPS troopers are leading the probe, with local deputies assisting at the scene. Authorities asked drivers to steer clear of the area during the response and initially did not provide an estimate for how long the closure would last, according to WOAI.
This is a developing story. Officials say more details will be released as the investigation continues.
