A 15-year-old boy is in recovery at Tripler Army Medical Center after suffering a gunshot wound to the head, according to Honolulu police. Officers said the teen’s parents drove him to Tripler’s emergency room Sunday afternoon, where he arrived in critical condition. The parents told police the shooting was accidental and said it happened off a military base.
According to Hawaii News Now, the Honolulu Police Department said the parents brought the teen to Tripler at about 12:40 p.m. Sunday and investigators have opened an inquiry into what led up to the shooting. The outlet reported it had contacted HPD for additional details.

Tripler is the U.S. military medical center on Oʻahu and runs a 24-hour emergency department along with pediatric trauma services, where the teen is being treated. The hospital’s public information notes neurosurgery and pediatric intensive care capabilities that are often used in head-trauma cases, according to the Tripler Army Medical Center website.
