A 35-year-old man is in custody after Honolulu police say he plowed through two separate hit-and-run crashes, minutes apart, that injured three people in Kalihi and downtown on Saturday. Officers tracked him down on Hotel Street shortly after the second collision and arrested him at the scene. One victim, a bicyclist in Kalihi, was hospitalized in serious condition, while two others were treated for injuries.
What Police Say Happened
According to KITV, the chaos started on Kuwili Street in Kalihi when a vehicle hit a 46-year-old man on a bicycle. Roughly 12 minutes later, investigators say the same vehicle was involved in another crash downtown at the intersection of Hotel Street and Alakea Street, where it collided with a car and struck a pedestrian.
Officers responding to the downtown scene located and arrested a 35-year-old man there. Investigators told KITV they are treating both crashes as attempted murders, and that formal charges are still pending.
Who Was Hurt
Emergency medical crews took three people to the hospital after the back-to-back collisions. The bicyclist, a 46-year-old man, was listed in serious condition. A 37-year-old woman and a 54-year-old man who were involved in the downtown crash were also hospitalized.
First responders treated the victims at the scenes before transporting them to local hospitals for further evaluation. Authorities have not released updates on their conditions.
Legal Questions Ahead
Police say detectives are still collecting evidence and have not finalized any charges. Their findings will be sent to the Honolulu Prosecuting Attorney's Office, which will decide on potential counts.
Because investigators are treating both incidents as attempted murders, any resulting charges would be felonies that could carry significant prison time if proven in court.
How The Public Can Help
Investigators are asking anyone who witnessed either crash, or who may have dashcam or cellphone video, to contact police. Tips can also be submitted anonymously to Crime Stoppers Honolulu at 808‑955‑8300.
Detectives with HPD's Traffic Division are continuing to investigate and have not released a motive or the suspect's name, only his age. The department is urging anyone with information to call Crime Stoppers or the police non-emergency line as they work to piece together the full timeline of what happened.
