A semi driver was killed early Wednesday after his truck slammed into the back of another tractor-trailer and burst into flames on I-65 north just outside Nashville. The crash happened just after midnight near the split for Vietnam Veterans Parkway, and the fire tore through the cab and most of the trailer, which crews said was hauling packages. Emergency responders shut down the interstate while firefighters and state crews worked to secure the scene and start the long cleanup.
Crash details and response
According to WSMV, the rear semi hit the trailer of another tractor-trailer, and the impact triggered a fire that engulfed the back truck and much of its load. The driver of the rear truck died at the scene. Crews from the Metro Nashville Police Department, the Nashville Fire Department, and the Tennessee Department of Transportation responded to the interstate, working through the night to douse hot spots and begin removing debris.
Traffic and official updates
Per ErinTDOT, I-65 northbound at mile marker 94 near Vietnam Vets Boulevard was closed because of a crash involving at least two semis. TDOT’s traffic account urged drivers to use SmartWay for live updates while crews managed the scene and warned that motorists should expect delays in the Madison area while lanes were blocked.

Investigation and lane reopenings
According to WSMV, TDOT shut down all northbound lanes and diverted traffic off at Old Hickory Boulevard in Madison as crews worked. The station reported that the investigation and cleanup could last several more hours, and TDOT estimated that at least one northbound lane might reopen around 7 a.m. Officials had not yet released the identity of the driver who was killed.
Why this matters for drivers
I-65 is a key freight and commuter route through Middle Tennessee, and shutdowns on the interstate often spill traffic onto neighborhood streets as drivers search for workarounds. TDOT’s ongoing I-65 improvement work and SmartWay traffic tools are intended to help manage those ripple effects, the department noted in a recent news release (TDOT). Drivers should expect lingering slowdowns while recovery crews finish removing the wreckage and towing the burned trailer away.
