A 92-year-old La Jolla man has been identified as the victim of a fatal house fire after he was found unconscious inside his smoke-filled home on La Jolla Shores Drive, officials said. The man, Trung Tran, was pulled from the residence around 9 a.m. last Friday, then taken to Scripps Memorial Hospital La Jolla, where he was pronounced dead shortly after arriving. Investigators are still working to determine what started the early-morning blaze.
The San Diego County Medical Examiner publicly released Tran's identity and reported that he was discovered passed out in the home at about 9 a.m. Friday, according to NBC 7 San Diego. San Diego Fire-Rescue crews brought the flames under control in roughly 20 minutes, and paramedics transported Tran to Scripps Memorial Hospital La Jolla, where he was pronounced dead a short time later.
Cause of death remains under review
"A ruling on the cause of his death remains on hold pending completion of postmortem examinations and analysis," the county Medical Examiner's Office said, according to NBC 7 San Diego. San Diego Fire-Rescue reported that it took crews about 20 minutes to fully put out the fire and secure the scene, giving investigators a clearer look at what was left behind.
Older residents face higher risks and simple prevention steps
National data show that older adults face disproportionate danger when a home fire breaks out. In 2022, people 65 and older were about 2.6 times more likely to die in a fire than the overall population, according to the U.S. Fire Administration. Fire chiefs and safety advocates regularly stress basic protections, including working UL-listed smoke alarms on every level of a home and inside bedrooms, along with monthly testing. The International Association of Fire Chiefs offers practical advice on where to place alarms and how often to check them, guidance that can be especially critical for older residents living alone.
