A pre-dawn confrontation that started as an alleged domestic dispute in Rancho Mission Viejo ended in gunfire near a Lake Forest park early Friday, leaving a man hospitalized in critical condition after he was shot by an Orange County Sheriff's deputy. According to the Orange County Sheriff's Department, the man showed up around 2:30 a.m. at his former girlfriend's home in Rancho Mission Viejo, near Cow Camp Road and Antonio Parkway. When the occupant opened the door, the man "brandished a handgun," Sgt. Gerard McCann told NBC Los Angeles.
Deputies later tracked the man to Lake Forest. They say he took off in a vehicle, then bailed out after a short pursuit and moved toward deputies. At that point, a deputy opened fire, striking the man multiple times, the department said. He was transported to a hospital in critical condition. Investigators said they recovered a handgun and a knife at the scene.

Gunfire was reported around 3:50 a.m. in the 21000 block of Rimgate Drive, next to Rimgate Park, according to Patch. Deputies remained in the neighborhood into the morning while investigators documented the scene. As of the latest updates, authorities had not released the man's name or age.

Residents in the normally quiet area woke up to sirens, flashing lights and blocked streets. Some families found themselves temporarily stuck at home as deputies locked down parts of the neighborhood. One Lake Forest resident told NBC Los Angeles that parents had to load kids into cars and carefully navigate around the active investigation just to get them to school. The neighbor said the incident was a stark reminder of how quickly intimate-partner disputes can spill beyond a single home and into surrounding blocks.
