A Burnsville man was killed late Tuesday after being thrown from his motorcycle on southbound I-35E near the Highway 77 interchange in Eagan. According to authorities, the bike left the roadway and hit a patch of gravel and dirt, and traffic in the southbound lanes slowed while emergency crews and investigators worked the scene.
State Patrol account
According to CBS Minnesota, the Minnesota State Patrol said the rider, a 29-year-old from Burnsville, was headed south at about 9:35 p.m. when his motorcycle entered gravel and dirt and he was ejected. The patrol told CBS Minnesota that no other vehicles were involved and that the crash was fatal. Troopers said the motorcycle came to rest near the shoulder while they processed the scene.
Multi-agency response
Reporting by the Pioneer Press shows that crews from the Eagan Police and Fire Departments, Apple Valley Police and M Health Fairview EMS assisted at the crash site. Officials have said the investigation is ongoing as troopers work to determine how the motorcycle left the roadway.
Spring riding hazards
The Minnesota Department of Public Safety warns that spring riding can bring hidden trouble in the form of loose gravel, uneven pavement and potholes, conditions that can quickly unbalance a motorcycle, and urges riders to slow for curves and motorists to give motorcycles extra space. DPS also recommends that riders refresh their training and wear highly visible protective gear, particularly during early-season rides. Minnesota DPS publishes seasonal safety tips for both riders and drivers.
