A late-night dirt bike crash near downtown Hilo turned fatal Wednesday, as a rider died after colliding with a sedan and forcing officers to shut down a busy intersection while they worked the scene, police said.

What Happened

The collision happened at about 10:24 p.m. at the intersection of West Kawili and Kinoole streets, when a black-and-yellow Suzuki dirt bike headed westbound struck a 2012 Nissan Versa that was turning left into a parking lot, according to Honolulu Star-Advertiser. The rider was pronounced dead at 10:45 p.m.

The Nissan's 22-year-old driver and two passengers were taken to Hilo Benioff Medical Center with injuries that authorities described as non-life-threatening, the outlet reported.

Investigation And Traffic Trend

Hawai‘i Police Department traffic figures list four fatal crashes and four fatalities as of April 12. This new death would raise Hawai‘i Island's 2026 total to five, according to the department's weekly DUI report from the Hawai‘i Police Department.

Even with the increase, the report notes the island remains ahead of last year, when the same period saw nine fatal crashes and 10 deaths. Police say DUI roadblocks and patrols will keep rolling out across the island.

Police Response

Officers have not yet released the rider's name, pending positive identification and notification of family, and an autopsy has been ordered to determine the exact cause of death, according to Honolulu Star-Advertiser.

Authorities told the paper that speed is being investigated as a possible contributing factor. The East Hawai‘i Traffic Enforcement Unit is leading the case, and anyone with information is asked to contact Officer Johnathan Rapoza at the department.

Why It Matters

The deadly crash highlights ongoing safety risks for motorcyclists and dirt bike riders using public roads, even as early-season traffic deaths have dropped from last year, according to the Hawai‘i Police Department report.

Local officials say that continued enforcement efforts and community outreach remain key pieces of their push to prevent more deaths on Hawai‘i Island.
