A routine afternoon chore in Lincoln County ended in tragedy Wednesday when a Lincolnton man was hit and killed while riding a lawnmower across Killian Road, according to state troopers.
Troopers said they were called to the scene near Hoover Road at about 3:30 p.m., where they found 63-year-old Larry Lail dead at the site of the crash. The driver of the pickup involved in the collision, identified as 61-year-old Carl Bailey, was not hurt.
According to WCCB Charlotte, Lail was crossing Killian Road on a lawnmower when a 1987 Chevrolet pickup struck the mower. The station reports that the North Carolina State Highway Patrol provided the names of those involved and the basic timeline of what happened.
Troopers' findings and legal outcome
State troopers, as quoted by WCCB Charlotte, said that “neither speed, impairment, or other negligent factors played a role in the collision.” With that assessment, the patrol told the station it does not plan to file any charges tied to the crash.
How to follow the official record
Anyone who may have information about the collision, including dash-cam footage from the area around the time of the crash, is asked to contact the North Carolina State Highway Patrol.
The patrol maintains collision-report tools and contact details online through the NC State Highway Patrol website, which includes a public collision-search portal.
Troopers said the case remains a non-criminal collision review. An official report will be added to the patrol’s records once it is completed, and investigators are encouraging anyone with additional information to come forward so they can finalize the file.
