Two 17-year-old boys sitting in the Donald E. Long Juvenile Detention Center on attempted murder charges in a Gresham drive-by are now at the center of a second, even bigger case. Investigators say ballistics work has tied the Gresham shooting to a deadly Vancouver, Washington, homicide, and court materials reviewed by local reporters show detectives on both sides of the Columbia River trying to sort out who pulled the trigger and whether the same car and crew were involved in both crimes.
According to KATU, court documents say detectives matched shell casings from the Vancouver killing scene to those recovered after the Gresham drive-by. The paperwork also ties in a 2019 Honda Civic that investigators say was stolen in Portland the day before the Vancouver homicide, then later caught on camera at an ARCO station in Chehalis. A cellphone linked to one of the teens allegedly pinged near the Vancouver crime scene, and juvenile prosecutors have stacked up charges in the Gresham case, including two counts of attempted first-degree murder, seven counts of attempted second-degree murder, criminal conspiracy to commit murder, burglary and unlawful use of a weapon.
Gresham drive-by and victim
The Gresham shooting took place on May 14, 2025, when gunfire hit a home in the 3500 block of SE Richey Road and a man with gunshot wounds was later dropped off at Adventist Health, as reported by KPTV. The victim was identified as 21-year-old Jeffrey Daniel, who was critically hurt and later died from his injuries, according to a press release from the Gresham Police Department. Earlier coverage detailed the first round of arrests and evidence recovered on Richey Road; see Hoodline's report on the youths charged in the drive-by.
Vancouver killing tied to prowls
In Vancouver, police identified the homicide victim as 62-year-old Rodney Hupp. Investigators say he was shot after confronting people suspected of prowling cars early on May 3, 2025, according to KATU. Detectives told reporters that car prowls had been reported around the 8500 block of NE 15th Street and that Hupp's garage door opener appeared to have been taken from a rental car parked in his driveway before the confrontation and fatal shooting.
Where the cases stand now
Both teens remain locked up at the Donald E. Long Juvenile Detention Center while the juvenile cases tied to the Gresham shooting move forward, according to KPTV. Investigators say they are still working to firm up the link between the second teen and the Vancouver homicide through cellphone records and other forensic evidence, and court documents do not yet spell out which suspect is believed to have fired the fatal shots. Prosecutors and detectives are asking anyone who might have information or surveillance footage from either night to contact the respective police departments as the joint investigation continues.
