A $15 million freestanding emergency room is now open in Lutz, giving residents along the State Road 54 corridor a new 24/7 option when a crisis hits.
HCA Florida Sunlake Emergency opened today at the southeast corner of State Road 54 and Sunlake Boulevard, occupying about 11,000 square feet. The new site includes private exam rooms, a fully equipped trauma bay, on-site lab services and imaging to speed up diagnosis and treatment. Ambulances can bring patients directly to the facility.
The opening and project cost were first reported by the Tampa Bay Times, which noted that the ER is designed to keep pace with Pasco County’s rapid population growth. The outlet reported that the Sunlake and Trinity communities are among those expected to rely on the new site, which is also intended to ease crowding at nearby hospital emergency departments.
In a July 2025 release, HCA Florida described Sunlake Emergency as the system’s fourth freestanding emergency department, operating around the clock. The release also noted that Trinity Hospital treated more than 74,000 emergency patients last year. “Pasco County is one of the fastest-growing counties in the United States,” CEO Mike Irvin said in the statement.
Why Pasco Needs Another ER
Pasco County’s rapid growth is not just a talking point, it is in the numbers. The U.S. Census Bureau QuickFacts shows the county’s population increased about 17.3 percent between April 1, 2020, and July 1, 2024.
Local health systems and regional planners have pointed to rising demand and longer travel times for inpatient care as reasons to expand emergency capacity, especially along busy corridors like State Road 54.
What To Expect At Sunlake
According to HCA Florida, the Sunlake facility offers private exam rooms, imaging services including X-ray, CT and ultrasound, on-site lab testing and ambulance access. Board-certified physicians and specially trained nurses staff the ER.
The system says patients who need to be admitted will have seamless transfers to nearby HCA hospitals for higher levels of care.
Before opening day, HCA hosted a community “Family Fun Day” on Saturday at the site, according to an event listing on AllEvents. The emergency room is listed at 18810 State Road 54 in Lutz.
For now, Sunlake Emergency is operating as a full-service emergency department with a focus on quickly stabilizing and diagnosing patients, then arranging transfers when more intensive or inpatient care is needed.
