A Marion, Arkansas, police officer was injured during the arrest of a suspect who allegedly fought with an officer, stole a patrol car, and took off on eastbound Interstate 40, according to local authorities. The stolen cruiser sparked a multi-agency chase that ended after officers used a tactical maneuver to stop the vehicle. The suspect was taken into custody, and the injured officer was transported to Regional One Health in Memphis in stable condition.
According to the Marion Police Department, as reported by FOX13 Memphis, officers located the stolen patrol car with help from the Crittenden County Sheriff's Office, the West Memphis Police Department, and the Arkansas State Police. Arkansas State Police then executed a Tactical Vehicle Intervention (TVI) on I-40 East to end the pursuit, and the suspect was taken into custody after the maneuver.
How the chase ended
TVI, the controlled-crash maneuver sometimes referred to as a PIT, is a high-risk tactic used to immobilize fleeing vehicles. Its deployment on the busy stretch of I-40 near Memphis has had serious consequences before. A 2023 Arkansas Times report described a TVI on I-40 that resulted in injuries to both a state trooper and a suspect, highlighting the danger officers weigh when deciding to use the tactic.
Officer, suspect and investigation
Marion police said the injured officer was struck by another car at the scene and taken to Regional One in Memphis in stable condition, while the suspect remains in custody pending booking and possible charges, per FOX13 Memphis.
