A getaway to Puerto Rico ended in tragedy for a Metro Atlanta family after a zipline outing in the island’s central region left 40-year-old Tamirah Dix dead, according to Puerto Rican authorities. Officials say Dix, a Georgia resident, became ill following an apparent injury during a visit to a popular adventure park, and investigators are handling the case while her family works to bring her home.
Police and local outlets report that the emergency call came in on Saturday evening. Paramedics met Dix in Dorado, transported her to a nearby hospital, performed CPR, and she was pronounced dead at 6:32 p.m., according to Primera Hora. The outlet reports that the División de Homicidios of the Cuerpo de Investigaciones Criminales in Vega Baja is leading the inquiry, and authorities have not yet released an official cause of death.
What Happened During The Outing
Local reporting indicates Dix was visiting Toro Verde Adventure Park in Orocovis when she reportedly suffered a heavy blow to the face while preparing for a zipline. She still completed the run and later told relatives she was not feeling well, according to NotiCel. Family members say they took her back to their hotel in Dorado, and her condition worsened along PR-693 before paramedics intercepted their vehicle and rushed her to a hospital.
Adventure Park Background And Safety Context
Toro Verde is a destination zipline park in Orocovis that promotes multiple courses, including “The Monster,” one of its longest runs, and lists its location as Bo. Gato, Road 155, km 33 in Orocovis. Toro Verde's website details the attraction, and federal court records show the park has previously faced legal claims over zipline injuries. Court filings outline at least one serious-injury claim tied to The Monster in 2019, and Court documents describe that earlier case.
Investigation And Family Response
Family members told 11Alive they are working to arrange for Dix’s remains to be returned to Metro Atlanta. Authorities have reiterated that the cause of death has not been determined and that investigators with the CIC’s Vega Baja homicide division are handling the case, according to local reporting.
Officials say more details will be released after a forensic examination. Local police are asking anyone with information about the outing or the hours that followed to contact the Cuerpo de Investigaciones Criminales in Vega Baja. Investigators have not publicly alleged any criminal conduct, and they say forensic results and an autopsy will determine whether the death was accidental or the result of another cause.
