A Miami father is facing serious charges after investigators say he tried to get sexually explicit images from his 13-year-old daughter through text messages, asking her for the “sexiest photograph” and telling her not to let her younger sister find out. Authorities identified the suspect as 39-year-old John Jairo Mendez, and said the alleged conduct occurred April 6 in northwest Miami-Dade. The arrest has reignited local worries about how often kids are quietly targeted through private messages.
What police say
According to 7 News WSVN, Mendez was arrested on April 9 following a police investigation into the report. WSVN reports that he allegedly confessed, was taken to the Turner Guilford Knight Detention Center, and is being held on a $7,500 bond. A judge has ordered him to stay away from the victim.
Florida law and penalties
Per Florida Statutes, lewd or lascivious conduct by an adult is classified as a second-degree felony, and a defendant cannot claim ignorance of the victim’s age as a defense. Under Florida sentencing rules, a second-degree felony can carry a maximum prison term of up to 15 years.
Why this matters
The National Center for Missing & Exploited Children has recorded sharp increases in reports of online enticement and sextortion in recent years, highlighting how frequently minors are targeted through texts, social media, and messaging apps. Those trends have fueled public-education campaigns and pushed more families to talk openly with children about digital safety and boundaries.
How to report
Anyone with information about this case is urged to contact Miami-Dade police or local law enforcement immediately. The Department of Homeland Security’s Know2Protect site provides guidance on how to report suspected online exploitation and lists resources for families seeking help after a child is targeted.
