A Sunday night confrontation in a Miami parking lot escalated from shouting match to gunfire, leaving one man riddled with bullets and another in handcuffs, according to police. The alleged shooter, a 32-year-old Miami resident, later called 911 and told dispatchers he opened fire on a driver who he claimed tried to hit him with an SUV.

Detectives say surveillance video from the scene instead shows a tense argument, a stationary vehicle and a man reaching for a gun.

What police say

According to Local10, the trouble started around 8:54 p.m. Sunday, when four ShotSpotter alerts were triggered near Northeast Miami Court and 71st Street.

Officers responding to the alerts found a man in the driver’s seat of a blue 2020 Nissan Murano suffering from multiple gunshot wounds. Police pulled him from the SUV while Miami Fire Rescue crews provided medical aid at the scene.

Investigators say they recovered a Smith & Wesson handgun from the alleged shooter, along with both an empty and a full magazine. The man was arrested and charged with attempted second-degree murder, using a firearm while committing a felony and unlawful discharge of a firearm in a public place, according to the arrest report cited by Local10.

Video and evidence

Detectives later obtained surveillance footage from the parking lot at 7101 N. Miami Ave, where the confrontation unfolded. The video shows the two men getting into a verbal argument, the victim climbing into his SUV and the suspect reaching into his waistband before firing several shots toward the passenger side of the vehicle while it sits still, according to the arrest report.

“Due to the video lag and limited clarity, it cannot be conclusively determined whether the vehicle struck the defendant,” an officer wrote in the report, as quoted by Local10. That detail could end up being a key point in whatever legal battle comes next.

Charges and custody

Police identified the suspect as 32-year-old Samuel Saint Remy of Miami. Online records listed his bond status as “to be set.” He was booked into the Turner Guilford Knight Correctional Center, the county’s main jail facility listed on the Miami-Dade Corrections & Rehabilitation website.

The publicly released arrest report notes that Saint Remy invoked his right to remain silent. Portions of the file, including what police describe as some spontaneous statements and a recorded phone call with his mother, were redacted from the version made available to the public.

What happens next

Saint Remy remains behind bars while prosecutors go through the arrest report, surveillance footage and other evidence before deciding on formal charges and scheduling any arraignment. Investigators have not released additional video or documents beyond the arrest report so far.

Authorities say the investigation is still active as detectives work through witness interviews, video angles and forensic evidence to piece together exactly how a parking lot argument turned into a hail of gunfire.
