Michigan drivers finally caught a tiny break at the pump last week, though it probably does not feel like much of a win at the register.
After hitting a 2026 high just days ago, the statewide average price for regular unleaded has slipped about 11 cents to roughly $3.98 per gallon. Metro Detroit, however, is not playing along with the trend. The region’s average now sits near $3.92, a three-cent climb from the previous week. Filling a typical 15-gallon tank will still run close to $60.
Those numbers come from WXYZ, citing AAA’s daily fuel tracking. The outlet notes Michigan’s statewide average is up roughly 38 cents from last month and about 88 cents compared with a year ago. Its breakdown also puts Benton Harbor, Grand Rapids and Jackson among the priciest markets, while Flint, Metro Detroit and Saginaw rank among the least expensive spots to fill up.
How AAA Builds Those Daily Averages
AAA compiles its state and metro averages using credit card transactions and direct station data feeds from thousands of locations, a system that can make the statewide number move quickly when prices change. The group also stresses that short-term swings are common and that today’s relief can disappear just as fast, a point detailed by AAA.
Why Prices Are Still On A Roller Coaster
National market forces are doing Michigan drivers no favors. Recent moves in the oil market have pushed pump prices higher across the country, with the U.S. retail average topping $4 a gallon, according to AP News. Analysts say geopolitical tensions and even brief supply hiccups can flip local trends in a hurry, so that statewide dip may not be something to count on for long.
For drivers hunting for the cheapest possible fill-up, station-level maps, price comparisons and discount details are available through AAA and several pricing apps that rely on the same data feeds. AAA also suggests shopping around when you can, paying cash where it trims a few cents off per gallon and combining errands so every tank stretches a little farther.
