What Police Say
In a post on Honolulu Police social media, officers said District 1 patrol units were called out at about 12:55 a.m. for a stabbing at a bus stop along Ala Moana Boulevard. The incident is being investigated as Attempted Murder in the Second Degree.
Police said the 43-year-old victim was stabbed multiple times, then made his way to Ala Moana Center, where he alerted security and was taken to a nearby hospital. His current condition has not been released. Investigators are asking anyone with information to call 911 or contact Crime Stoppers at (808) 955-8300.
Suspect Description And Leads
Witnesses described the suspect as a Micronesian man in his 30s, with a medium build, no shirt, gray shorts, a white sweater tied around his waist and a fedora-style hat, according to police. Officers said he fled the scene on a BMX bicycle heading toward Waikīkī.
Detectives are canvassing the Ala Moana and Waikīkī areas and reviewing surveillance footage from nearby businesses and properties in an effort to track the suspect and piece together what led up to the attack.
Ala Moana Safety Concerns
The Ala Moana–Waikīkī corridor has seen a string of late night assaults and stabbings in recent months, raising ongoing questions about safety in one of Honolulu's busiest shopping and beach park zones, according to coverage by Hawaii News Now.
Previous reporting on a late night stabbing at Ala Moana Beach notes that community members and business owners have been calling for more patrols, stronger lighting and a more visible police presence along the corridor while detectives continue to investigate these incidents.
How To Help
Police say tips from the public could be key in cracking this case. Anyone who saw the attack or has video showing a BMX rider in the Ala Moana–Waikīkī area around 1 a.m. on April 17 is urged to call Crime Stoppers at (808) 955-8300 or dial 911.
Crime Stoppers allows callers to remain anonymous, and investigators say even small details about the suspect, his bike or his direction of travel could help them make an arrest.
