Minneapolis is starting Thursday on a cool note at about 48°F with mostly clear skies at Minneapolis–St. Paul International Airport, but it will not stay that way for long. Sunshine takes over quickly and temperatures are set to rocket toward the 80°F mark this afternoon. South-southeast winds will strengthen through the day, with the stiffest breezes expected late in the afternoon.
Afternoon Heat And Fire Risk
Dry air, full sun and increasing southerly winds will drive readings into the upper 70s to around 80°F across the Twin Cities metro. Parts of west-central and southwest Minnesota sit under a Red Flag Warning from 11 a.m. to 8 p.m. today, as low humidity paired with gusty winds could help any fire spread fast. According to the National Weather Service Twin Cities, relative humidity in the warned areas is expected to drop into the teens and 20s this afternoon.
What To Do Today
If you can, skip open burning today and put off debris or brush piles for another time. Keep grills and lawn equipment away from dry grass or brush. If you absolutely need to run outdoor equipment or deal with any flame, keep water or a hose within reach and do not leave it unattended. Before lighting anything outdoors, pull up the Minnesota DNR’s daily fire danger and burning restrictions map – the Minnesota DNR posts county fire restrictions and permit details there.
Friday's Strong Cold Front
Friday brings a sharp pattern change with a strong cold front. Showers and thunderstorms are likely after midmorning, with a few storms capable of becoming strong to severe, mainly east of I-35. Temperatures are forecast to tumble about 20 to 25°F through the day once the front moves through, and southwest winds may gust around 30 mph ahead of the boundary. If you have outdoor plans, keep tabs on the forecast Friday morning since the line of storms could produce brief damaging winds and hail.
Weekend Cool-Down
Much colder air will settle in for the weekend. Saturday’s high is only expected to reach the mid-40s with a brisk northwest wind, and a few light snow flurries are possible, although little to no accumulation is anticipated. By Sunday, conditions ease up with sunshine returning and highs climbing into the low 50s, followed by a gradual warmup early next week.
Legal Implications
Red Flag conditions often come with local burning bans or permit rules, and ignoring them can lead to fines as well as civil liability if a fire escapes and causes damage. If there is any doubt, check county regulations or contact local fire officials before you burn anything outdoors.
