Police Seek Witnesses As They Piece Together Deadly Crash
According to the Morgan Hill Police Department's Facebook post, officers responded at approximately 8:03 PM Sunday to a two-vehicle collision involving an electric scooter and a vehicle on the 14000 block of Monterey Road. Emergency crews began life-saving measures, but the rider was pronounced deceased at the scene, the post states.
Police said it is not yet known whether alcohol or drug impairment played a role and offered condolences to the rider's family. Investigators are asking anyone with information to contact Detective Sergeant Sean Bayard at (408) 607-3032 or email [email protected]. Tips can also be submitted anonymously through the city's Crime Stoppers form.
E-Scooter Dangers Rising, While Crashes Stay Under The Radar
Nationally, injuries and deaths linked to electric scooters have climbed in recent years, with the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission reporting increases in emergency-department visits and fatalities tied to micromobility devices, according to the agency's micromobility guidance. The U.S. Department of Transportation also notes that micromobility crashes are often underreported, which makes it harder for officials to track trends and shape safety policy.
Closer to home, nearby San Jose recorded a fatal e-scooter collision in 2023, a reminder that riders remain especially vulnerable on South Bay streets. Local examples like that, and now Morgan Hill's latest case, show how common and deadly these kinds of crashes can be.
Safety Reminders For Drivers And Riders
Morgan Hill police are using the crash as a sobering reminder for drivers to stay alert, follow traffic laws and use extra caution in low-light conditions, guidance that echoes what the department shared on Facebook. Officers say anyone who witnessed the collision or captured it on video should reach out to Detective Sergeant Bayard or use the online tip form to help investigators follow up.
The department says the investigation is active and ongoing and has not released additional details about the vehicle involved or the rider who died.
