A routine Friday morning drive turned tragic at the intersection of Newcastle Road and MacArthur Boulevard in Oklahoma City, where a bicyclist was struck by a vehicle and killed, police said. Officers arrived to find the rider with severe injuries, and the cyclist was pronounced dead at the scene. The crash shut down lanes and bogged down the early commute along the busy corridor while investigators worked.
According to KOKH, the victim has not yet been publicly identified. Police told the station that the driver stayed at the scene and is cooperating with investigators. Officers asked motorists to steer clear of the area while they examined the crash site. Authorities have not released any information about what may have caused the collision.
Crash site is a busy corridor targeted for upgrades
The city has marked stretches of MacArthur and Newcastle for resurfacing and pedestrian improvements in its 2025 GO Bond street plan, according to Vision OKC. Planned sidewalk and bike upgrades in those corridors are guided by the city's bikewalkOKC master plan, which was updated in 2024 to prioritize projects that reduce collisions and improve safety. City leaders say the planning tools help flag where new bike lanes, crossings and sidewalk work are most urgently needed.
What to expect next
Police say the investigation is ongoing and that more information will be released as it becomes available, and drivers are still being urged to avoid the area while emergency crews finish their work, KOKH reports. Authorities said anyone with dash-cam footage or other information should contact the Oklahoma City Police Department's traffic division. This story will be updated as officials share additional details.
