A 26-year-old Murfreesboro mother of four, Hannah Jackson, was found fatally shot inside her home, and police have arrested her former boyfriend in connection with her killing. Relatives say some of Jackson's young children were inside the house when the shooting happened, and family members are now caring for them. Visitation and funeral services are set for Saturday, according to the family.
What Investigators Say Happened Inside the Home
According to FOX 17 News, investigators allege the suspect used a door code he was not authorized to have to enter the home and shot Jackson multiple times. Family members told the station the two youngest children, a 20-month-old and a 4-year-old, were inside during the shooting and that relatives later returned the children to their mother. Jackson's mother, Danielle, told FOX 17, "He unloaded his weapon on my daughter. She had no shot, no chance."
Police Response and Arrest
Rutherford County deputies located 27-year-old David Ivy at a home on Steelson Court and took him into custody after family members told deputies he had been involved in a domestic incident and was threatening to harm himself, according to WSMV. Murfreesboro Police found Jackson inside a Tinnell Court residence and turned the investigation over to the department's Violent Crimes Unit with assistance from the sheriff's office. Authorities say the investigation is ongoing as they gather evidence and interview witnesses.
Charges and Court Date
David Ivy has been charged with first-degree homicide, unlawful possession of a weapon while committing a dangerous felony, and especially aggravated burglary, and he is being held at the Rutherford County Adult Detention Center, according to NewsChannel 5. Local reporting lists a $700,000 bond and a General Sessions hearing set for June 22. Prosecutors and investigators have said they will present evidence as the case proceeds through the courts.
Family, Grief and Funeral Plans
Relatives described Jackson as a devoted mother who had recently moved to escape an abusive relationship and was trying to build a safer life for her children, family members told FOX 17 News. The family says they are caring for the children and that visitation and funeral services will be held Saturday at River Oaks Community Church. A GoFundMe was also shared online to help the family with arrangements, according to local outlets.
Statewide Domestic Violence Context
The Tennessee Bureau of Investigation's annual "Crime in Tennessee" report recorded about 60,000 domestic-relationship victims in its 2023 data, illustrating the scope of such cases that are reported to law enforcement across the state. Those figures reflect reported victims and do not capture unreported abuse, which advocates say means the real toll on families and children is likely higher. Local advocates and lawmakers have in recent years called for expanded protections and improved tracking for domestic violence survivors.
