A report of a suspicious person on campus sent East Garner Middle School and neighboring East Garner Elementary into a Code Red lockdown Friday morning, tightening nerves across the Garner community. The lockdown was later lifted after law enforcement cleared the area, and school staff told families that students were safe. Even so, parents were urged to stay away from campus while officers did their work.
According to ABC11, school officials said the lockdown began shortly after staff spotted an unfamiliar person on the middle-school campus and alerted authorities. Officers then conducted a sweep of the grounds before giving the all-clear later in the morning.
WRAL reported that video from the scene showed parents lining up at dismissal and students being dropped off while emergency vehicles remained parked nearby. Footage also showed school staff keeping students inside and officers patrolling and checking the campus perimeter during the response.
