New Orleans police are asking for the public’s help tracking down a man they believe could be the missing puzzle piece in a French Quarter business burglary investigation. Detectives say a shop in the 500 block of Canal Street was hit in the predawn hours of April 21, and on Tuesday the department released a surveillance photo of a man they think might know what happened.
Investigators are stressing that the man in the images is not accused of anything. He is being sought strictly as a person who may have important information, and officers are hoping anyone who recognizes him will come forward. Neighbors, hotel guests, and visitors with cameras or doorbell systems near the 500 block are being urged to scroll back through their footage from that night and see if they caught anything useful.
Police Release Photo, Ask For Leads
According to NOPD News, the business burglary happened around 12:05 a.m. on April 21 in the 500 block of Canal Street. The man shown in the released images “is believed to possess information important to the investigation,” the department wrote.
Officers posted several surveillance stills on the department’s news site and asked the community to study them closely. In the same notice, NOPD underlined that the individual “is NOT wanted for this crime” and should be treated as a witness or potential source of information if spotted, not as a suspect.
How To Report Tips
“Anyone with additional information that can assist in this investigation is urged to contact NOPD Eighth District detectives at 504-658-6080,” the department stated. Anonymous tips can be submitted through Crimestoppers of Greater New Orleans by calling 504-822-1111 or toll-free at 1-877-903-STOP, or by using its online tip portal.
Detectives are especially interested in any saved surveillance clips or doorbell videos from the time of the break-in, and they are asking business owners, residents, and hotel operators to preserve those files and share them with investigators.
Canal Street Context
Canal Street’s dense run of shops, hotels, and offices has long made the corridor a regular target for property crime, and local coverage has documented a string of similar incidents in recent years. Hoodline previously reported on an earlier auto break-in on Canal, highlighting how heavily officers lean on security footage and community tips in cases like this.
That track record helps explain why NOPD quickly pushed out images and a public request for help after this latest early-morning break-in. The department says it will share updates if new leads develop.
