A late-night fight outside a North Austin bar turned deadly when gunfire erupted in the parking lot, leaving one man dead and another seriously wounded after a security guard returned fire, according to police. The shooting unfolded outside Michelobos Sports Bar at 900 E. Braker Lane in the early morning hours of Nov. 1, 2024. The man killed was identified as 30-year-old Tyler Cochran, and police say 20-year-old Clayton Taitague survived and is now accused of the killing.

Detectives say surveillance video shows the argument spiraling into violence and the suspect pulling a gun. According to CBS Austin, Homicide Detective Bradley Parks told reporters the footage captured Taitague firing nine shots at Cochran, after which a Michelobos security guard fired roughly a dozen rounds at Taitague. Parks said Taitague remains hospitalized and faces a first-degree murder charge.

Officers were sent to the scene shortly after 1:40 a.m. on what dispatch labeled a "shoot/stab hotshot" call, and first responders pronounced Cochran dead in the parking lot while Taitague was transported to a hospital, according to FOX 7 Austin. Police say the two men had been arguing when the confrontation escalated and that Taitague obtained a gun during the dispute.

APD commanders say the busy strip mall at I-35 and Braker Lane, where the bar sits, has been a chronic trouble spot. CBS Austin reports the location generated 34 calls for service in 2023 and 61 calls in 2024, and Chief Lisa Davis said "both the frequency and intensity of these calls have increased."

Investigation Under Way

APD homicide detectives are reviewing surveillance footage and interviewing witnesses as they reconstruct what led up to the gunfire, and investigators say the suspect was detained at the scene. Reporting that prosecutors will be involved once the medically treated suspect is cleared for booking has also been echoed by other outlets.

Legal Questions Around Security Response

Investigators are also weighing whether the security guard’s rapid response will be considered justified under Texas law. FOX 7 Austin reported that police say the guard may fall under self-defense protections while detectives continue gathering evidence to present to prosecutors.

Owner, Neighbors Call for Action

The owner of Michelobos told reporters he has been warning police for some time about late-night groups gathering in the parking lot and said he has been increasing security on his own. He has a meeting scheduled with APD to talk through potential fixes, according to MySA. Authorities are asking anyone with information to contact APD's homicide tip line at 512-477-3588 or Crime Stoppers at 512-472-8477.
