An ordinary drive down the Northwest Freeway turned into a brief chase and felony arrest on Wednesday, when Harris County deputies with Constable Mark Herman's Precinct 4 pulled over a driver who allegedly tried to flee and was later found with a gun.
According to the constable's live update, the traffic stop unfolded in the 19000 block of the Northwest Freeway. Deputies took an adult man into custody and filed two charges: evading in a motor vehicle and felon in possession of a firearm. Precinct 4 reported that its special operations and K-9 units were assisting the DEA during the stop.
Precinct 4's account
According to Precinct 4, deputies from the constable's special operations and K-9 units were working with the DEA when they attempted a traffic stop in the 19000 block of the Northwest Freeway. The office says the driver initially tried to get away, which led to a short pursuit before he was detained and taken into custody.
The constable's post states that the man was charged with evading in a motor vehicle and unlawful possession of a firearm by a convicted felon. The office also used the update to urge residents to follow its social channels and to download the “C4 NOW” app for live alerts and incident reports.
Charges and legal stakes
Evading arrest in a motor vehicle falls under Texas Penal Code §38.04 and can be treated as a felony when a vehicle is involved, according to legal summaries such as FindLaw. Unlawful possession of a firearm by a convicted felon is covered by Texas Penal Code §46.04 and is generally charged as a third-degree felony, according to state guidance and opinions from the Texas Attorney General.
Northwest Freeway enforcement in recent weeks
The Northwest Freeway corridor has seen a steady stream of traffic stops and quick pursuits this spring, with Precinct 4 regularly posting live updates about arrests along the roadway. A similar traffic stop earlier this month involved a different high-profile suspect, and local TV coverage has shown that some chases in northwest Harris County have ended in serious crashes. ABC13's late-March reporting highlighted the deadly risks officers and drivers face when highway pursuits spin out of control.
In this latest incident, the suspect's name, bond details, and booking information were not included in the Precinct 4 Facebook update, and no separate release from another agency was posted at that time. Those details typically appear later in booking records or in an official statement that outlines the charges and upcoming court dates.
