A 40-year-old woman is recovering in the hospital after being shot multiple times Sunday evening along a troubled stretch of southwest Atlanta, according to police.
Atlanta Police Department Zone 4 officers were called around 6:56 p.m. to the 1300 block of Oakland Drive SW, near Campbellton Drive SW, where they found the woman suffering from several gunshot wounds. She was alert, conscious and breathing when medics took her to the hospital, authorities said.
According to FOX 5 Atlanta, preliminary investigators said a suspect known to the victim opened fire as she was leaving in a vehicle. The station, citing information from the Atlanta Police Department, reported that the city's Aggravated Assault Unit has taken the lead on the case. No arrests had been announced as of Monday morning.
Neighborhood context
The shooting unfolded in a corridor that has become uncomfortably familiar to both neighbors and patrol officers. Oakland Drive SW and the Campbellton Road corridor have repeatedly surfaced in police reports and local coverage of shootings in recent years.
A January 2025 drive-by that injured a teenager happened on the same street, according to WSB-TV. Separate Atlanta Police Department press notices list prior "person shot" calls and fatal shooting investigations tied to Oakland Drive addresses, making the southwest stretch a recurring focus for Zone 4 patrols and follow-up work.
Investigation
Detectives with the Atlanta Police Department's Aggravated Assault Unit are handling the case, FOX 5 Atlanta reports. Investigators believe the gunfire broke out as the victim was leaving in a vehicle and are canvassing the neighborhood for witnesses and surveillance video that might show what happened before and after the shots.
Authorities have not released a description of the suspect or a possible motive and have not announced any updates on the victim's condition beyond her initial transport.
