A driver was killed early Wednesday after their car veered off northbound I-95 in Broward County and plowed into a billboard support just south of the Oakland Park Boulevard exit, according to the Florida Highway Patrol.
Troopers said the vehicle left the travel lane, entered the outside grass shoulder, hit the post and then overturned into the tree line. The driver was pronounced dead at the scene, and officials have not yet released the person’s identity.
According to Local 10, the crash unfolded in the northbound lanes just south of Oakland Park Boulevard, with investigators still working to understand why the car suddenly left the roadway.
Crash Site And Safety Context
The wreck happened along a heavily traveled stretch of I-95 near the Oakland Park Boulevard interchange, an area that state planning documents and safety studies have repeatedly flagged for crashes and potential upgrades. The SR 9/I-95 PD&E study on 95Express reviews crash patterns and documents the need for improvements along this corridor.
Investigation Underway
Florida Highway Patrol troopers are investigating the single-vehicle crash and say they will release more information as it becomes available. For now, key questions remain unanswered, including what caused the driver to run off the interstate and whether any other factors played a role.
Authorities have not yet identified the driver publicly.
Billboards And Roadside Safety
Federal guidance calls for breakaway sign supports or protective shielding for roadside signs that sit inside a highway’s clear zone, with the goal of reducing the severity of crashes, according to the Federal Highway Administration. It is not yet known whether the billboard structure in this crash used a breakaway base or any other crash-mitigating design.
Investigators have not released additional details about why the vehicle left the road. Troopers are asking anyone who may have information or dash-cam footage from northbound I-95 near Oakland Park Boulevard around the time of the crash to contact the Florida Highway Patrol.
