Two men were wounded in a double shooting in Ocean Hill on Thursday evening, a jarring burst of gunfire that left both victims hospitalized but expected to survive.
Police said officers rushed to 1275 Herkimer St. after a 911 call shortly before 6 p.m., finding the pair shot outside the address. Emergency medical workers took both men to nearby hospitals. The younger victim, 33, was hit in the left leg and groin, while a 55-year-old man was shot in the back.
According to the Brooklyn Paper, the 33-year-old was transported to NYC Health + Hospitals/Kings County, and the 55-year-old was taken to Brookdale University Hospital Medical Center. Both were listed in stable condition.
Detectives said the shooter took off on foot, heading southbound on Rockaway Avenue, and was last seen dressed head to toe in black. No arrests have been made, and police say the investigation is very much active.
Shootings Down in the 73rd Precinct, City Data Show
Despite Thursday’s violence, official numbers show shootings have actually dropped this year in the 73rd Precinct, which covers Brownsville and Ocean Hill. NYPD CompStat data list three shootings through April 12, compared with eight during the same period in 2024, a decline of nearly 63 percent.
Those publicly posted precinct figures are a regular reference point for police brass, local officials, and neighborhood reporters who track crime trends block by block.
Block Has Seen Deadly Violence Before
The corner outside 1275 Herkimer is no stranger to serious violence. In January 2024, police said a 28-year-old man was fatally shot outside the same address, and investigators later released surveillance images in an effort to identify suspects, according to 1010 WINS. That killing highlighted long-running safety concerns in parts of the 73rd Precinct.
In the wake of the latest shooting, police are again asking the public for help. Anyone with information is urged to call Crime Stoppers at 1-800-577-TIPS. Officials said all calls will be kept confidential.
Detectives are asking residents or business owners with video or other potential evidence from Thursday evening to get in touch as they continue to follow up leads.
Investigators spent Friday morning canvassing the block and reviewing available footage. The NYPD said the probe remains active and that more details could be released as the case develops.
