An afternoon drive along the Ortega Highway ended in tragedy Wednesday when a westbound car veered off State Route 74 near Main Divide Truck Trail in Lake Elsinore, tumbled down a steep embankment and rolled several times. Emergency crews reached the wreck but could not save the driver, who was pronounced dead at the scene. Authorities shut down both directions of the mountain corridor for more than an hour while first responders worked the crash and cleared the highway.
According to CBS Los Angeles, the crash was reported at about 1:30 p.m. The vehicle, a Honda Civic, for unknown reasons veered off the westbound lanes before plunging down the hillside. Witnesses stopped and called 911, and Riverside County Fire Department paramedics pronounced the driver dead on arrival, the outlet reported. The victim has not yet been publicly identified while the California Highway Patrol continues its investigation.
CHP incident logs compiled on the fatal accident feed show officers issued a SigAlert and coordinated with Riverside County Sheriff’s deputies and Cal Fire crews to reach the wreckage, with entries noting an air unit checked the vehicle. The timeline in the records indicates both directions of SR‑74 were reopened a little after 3:20 p.m. as crews finished at the scene. Temecula‑area CHP officers are leading the probe into what caused the car to leave the roadway.
Ortega Highway Safety Upgrades Underway
Caltrans has an ongoing lane‑widening and safety project on SR‑74 aimed at reducing run‑off‑road and head‑on collisions by widening lanes and shoulders and adding rumble strips. Caltrans describes roughly a $96.1 million effort from just west of Monte Vista Street to Grand Avenue that includes the corridor near Main Divide. Construction has required intermittent closures and pilot‑car traffic control, which local officials say can complicate emergency access on the narrow, winding route.
That stretch of SR‑74, scenic but narrow as it winds through the Cleveland National Forest, has a long history of collisions and periodic shutdowns, and local reporting noted the crash occurred in an area already affected by the widening work. Patch coverage underscores how limited shoulders and construction traffic can increase risk, and residents continue to urge drivers to take extra care on the road.
CHP Temecula‑area officers continue to investigate, and the identity of the driver is being withheld pending notification of family. This story will be updated when authorities release more information.
