An overnight fire inside a Boyertown Elementary School classroom has shut down the Berks County campus for Monday, with students shifted to remote-style learning while officials sort out the damage and investigate what went wrong.
Staff discovered signs of the small fire early Monday, and crews were called in before dawn to knock down the blaze. District leaders responded by declaring a Flexible Instructional Day for Boyertown Elementary students instead of bringing them into the building.
In a statement, officials announced that "Boyertown Elementary will be closed today" and confirmed that students and staff would follow a Flexible Instructional Day schedule, according to NBC10 Philadelphia. The district emphasized that the closure applies only to Boyertown Elementary, and that all other BASD buildings are expected to operate on their regular schedules.
What Firefighters Found Inside
Fire crews arrived shortly after 1:30 a.m. and reported smoke in a hallway coming from a single classroom. Inside, they found a bulletin board on fire and quickly extinguished the flames, according to NBC10 Philadelphia. Officials have not yet determined how the fire started, and investigators are now working to figure out the cause.
How the Flexible Instructional Day Works
With the building closed, the district told families that students should complete activities on their Flexible Instructional Day, or FID, choice boards and treat Monday as a regular school day. The district's Flexible Instructional Days page outlines how choice boards are provided and how students are expected to turn in their work.
Elementary students may receive either a digital or paper choice board. Teachers will be available by email during designated FID hours to support students as they work through their assignments.
