An early morning fatal crash shut down Turkey Lake Road at Westgate Lakes Boulevard in Orange County on Monday, cutting off traffic in both directions near the busy I-4 corridor as troopers moved in to investigate.
Florida Highway Patrol troopers blocked the intersection while they worked the scene. Although I-4 itself had no lanes closed, drivers were urged to steer over to Apopka-Vineland Road or International Drive instead.
What officials said
The crash happened around 1:30 a.m., according to the Florida Highway Patrol, as reported by WESH. No additional information about how the collision unfolded was immediately released, and troopers stayed on scene to investigate.
Where this happened and why it matters
Turkey Lake Road and nearby Sand Lake Road sit in a part of Orange County flagged for a high rate of serious crashes, a local analysis found, and ClickOrlando reported. In response, the county has been rolling out quick safety improvements, including added lighting and short-term roadway fixes on segments of Turkey Lake Road, as part of an Accelerated Transportation Safety Program, the Orange County Government said.
Traffic impacts
Until crews cleared the scene, Turkey Lake Road stayed closed, with traffic diverted to Apopka-Vineland Road and International Drive, per WESH. Drivers in the convention and theme park corridor were told to expect delays while troopers wrapped up their on-site work.
Authorities have not yet released information about the victims, how many vehicles were involved, or what caused the collision. This is a developing story and will be updated as the Florida Highway Patrol and local officials release more details.
