Palm Beach County is thinking big about its tourism future, and the wish list is anything but modest. Local tourism planners are weighing a set of splashy projects that could reshape the county’s sports scene, events calendar and hotel bookings, all with one goal in mind: turning a mostly winter hot spot into a year-round draw.
On the board are ideas for a climate-controlled indoor sports arena that can host multiple sports, plus a cutting-edge immersive digital concert or art venue that would not look out of place in Las Vegas. County officials say the concepts are part of a broader push to keep visitors coming long after the snowbirds fly home.
The proposals are being vetted for cost, impact and possible locations, with recommendations scheduled to go before county commissioners in June, according to WPTV. The interest is fueled in part by momentum on the tourism front. Discover The Palm Beaches reports the county drew more than 10.7 million visitors in 2025, a record that boosters say helps justify new venues and bigger bets.
Inside the Big Ideas List
The county’s tourism master plan outlines roughly 10 to 11 concepts now under review. Among the headliners is an indoor multipurpose sports complex designed to host volleyball, basketball, futsal, wrestling, gymnastics, pickleball and cheer. Another marquee idea is an immersive digital art or concert venue modeled on experiences like Meow Wolf or the Las Vegas Sphere, meant to serve as a one-of-a-kind attraction for both tourists and locals.
Officials are also eyeing a potential expansion of the Palm Beach County Convention Center, with an eye toward better connections to nearby Howard Park. The wider menu of ideas includes new waterfront festivals, wellness-focused destinations, an iconic public landmark, a “Glades experience” aimed at showcasing the county’s agricultural areas and even an auto racetrack. All of these concepts appear in Tourist Development Council materials and meeting documents that staff are now analyzing.
Flag Football Dreams And Mega-Event Ambitions
Sports are a major part of the pitch. County Administrator Joseph Abruzzo told WPTV, "It is my full directive that from a staff perspective we compile all information," explaining that he wants the county ready to make a serious run at hosting the NFL’s new professional flag football leagues.
Beyond flag football, planners are looking at teaming up with Miami-Dade and Broward counties to serve as overflow or training locations for mega-events such as FIFA tournaments and the Olympics. The strategy is to share costs regionally while capturing more year-round room nights and related spending in Palm Beach County.
What It Might Cost And Who Pays
County commissioners have already signed off on feasibility studies for the full slate of ideas and directed staff to dig into market and site analyses. Those outside studies are expected to run into the six-figure range and will be paid for with bed-tax revenues, according to Stet News. Consultants and staff will look at projected costs, economic benefits and potential locations, then bring back recommendations this summer as the master plan consulting work wraps up.
The vision may be big, but the welcome is cautious. Local officials and residents have signaled interest in the possibilities while warning against public-private deals that leave taxpayers holding the bag. "Anytime we do public-private partnerships, the fear is the private is going to benefit while the public gives," Commissioner Marci Woodward told Stet News. The next major checkpoint will be a June briefing, when commissioners are expected to decide which concepts move ahead into full feasibility and financing plans and which ones stay on the drawing board.
