Philz Coffee, the Bay Area-born chain, is removing Pride flags and similar decorations from its cafes, a move that has already stirred anger among staff and customers across the region.
Company Frames Move as a Look and Feel Refresh
In an emailed statement, CEO Mahesh Sadarangani said Philz “was working toward creating a more consistent, inclusive experience across all our stores, including removing a variety of flags and other decor,” and added that the company’s support for LGBTQIA+ communities remains in place, according to the San Francisco Chronicle. The company has not said when decorations will actually come down.
Baristas Fire Up Petition
A group calling itself Philz Coffee Baristas launched a Change.org petition on April 5 asking Philz to keep Pride flags in stores; the petition shows 1,133 verified signatures as of this week, according to Change.org. Organizers say the flags signal that locations are safe and welcoming spaces for queer customers and team members.
Flags Still Hanging at Some Stores
On Wednesday, it remained unclear when stores would actually take down decorations: the San Francisco Chronicle reported a rainbow-adorned California flag and other Pride decorations were still on display at a downtown Philz while employees at other locations said they had not heard of a policy change, according to the San Francisco Chronicle. That patchwork rollout has left some baristas and customers pressing corporate leadership for clearer guidance.
Private Equity Deal Looms in Background
Many customers are reading the decision through the lens of last year’s sale of Philz to private equity: Mission Local reported the chain was purchased by Freeman Spogli & Co. in 2025 for about $145 million. KQED also noted the deal left some former employees who had purchased common stock with losses, a sore point that helps explain why staff are sensitive to shifts in store culture and decor.
Philz History With Pride Marketing
Philz has previously promoted Pride through its Unity Collection and other fundraisers; a company release distributed via PR Newswire detailed a Unity Collection that donated proceeds to LGBTQ scholarship groups, illustrating the chain’s prior public-facing Pride work, according to PR Newswire. That history is part of why some longtime customers and community groups see the new directive as abrupt.
Online Blowback and What Comes Next
The announcement set off vigorous discussion on Reddit and other platforms, with users urging boycotts and questioning whether the change came from corporate leadership or neighborhood stores; one widely shared post on r/sanfrancisco alleged the policy was driven from the top, according to r/sanfrancisco. Petition organizers say they are pressing Philz leadership for a reversal or clearer explanation, and observers say the company’s next public comments will determine whether the controversy fades or escalates.
