A violent collision in Cleveland County on Monday ended with a pickup truck driving over an oncoming car, killing one person and turning a stretch of roadway into a crash scene that stayed shut down for hours.
Authorities said the impact scattered wreckage across the road and triggered a large emergency response. Crews kept the area closed while investigators got to work, documenting every skid mark and piece of debris as they tried to piece together what led up to the deadly encounter.
According to WSOC-TV, the crash happened in Cleveland County and left one person dead. The station reported that emergency crews and law enforcement stayed on scene as investigators gathered evidence. Officials had not publicly identified the victim as of Monday.
Why head-on and wrong-way crashes turn so deadly
Crashes where vehicles slam into one another head-on or travel the wrong way are relatively uncommon compared with other types of wrecks, but they are far more likely to be fatal. A special investigation by the National Transportation Safety Board found that wrong-way and opposite-direction crashes lead to several hundred deaths nationwide each year and are more likely to result in fatalities than many other crash types. The report frequently cited impairment, high speeds and roadway or ramp layout as contributing factors, which helps explain why collisions like the one in Cleveland County so often have catastrophic outcomes.
Investigation and what comes next
In the days ahead, investigators are expected to take a close look at vehicle damage, speed, possible impairment and roadway conditions as they reconstruct the crash. WSOC-TV reported that troopers and other emergency personnel collected evidence at the scene; officials had not released further details. Anyone with information or dash-cam video that might help the investigation is typically asked to contact local law enforcement while the probe continues.
