An early-morning burst of gunfire left a 41-year-old East Palo Alto resident wounded Tuesday, after a shooting on the 700 block of Runnemede Street. Police said the victim was taken to a nearby hospital and is in stable condition, while officers fan out through the neighborhood looking for whoever pulled the trigger.
According to Palo Alto Online, East Palo Alto Police Chief Jeff Liu said officers responded to reports of gunfire and began canvassing the area soon after. Liu identified the injured person as a 41-year-old resident of the city and confirmed the victim was transported to a local hospital.
Police Statement and How to Tip
Chief Liu told Palo Alto Online, "We are not releasing investigative leads at this time." Detectives say they are reviewing nearby camera footage and following up on information coming in from the community, but for now, they are keeping the details close to the vest.
Police are urging anyone with information to speak up. Tips can be shared on the department's non-emergency line at (650) 321-1112, by texting anonymous information to 650-409-6792, or by emailing [email protected].
Where This Fits Into Local Trends
The shooting comes shortly after city leaders marked a hopeful milestone: two consecutive years without a homicide. Officials credited that streak to expanded mental health response teams, community action and youth development programs, according to reporting by SFGATE. City leaders have leaned on prevention and neighborhood engagement as key strategies to curb serious violence.
Investigators say they are continuing to track down leads in the Runnemede Street case and are seeking anyone who witnessed what happened or has relevant video footage. Police say they plan to release more information as the investigation moves forward.
