A heavy pre-dawn fire tore through a vacant commercial building in Chicago's Greater Grand Crossing neighborhood early Monday, turning the structure into a shell and sending thick smoke rolling down the block. The blaze sparked just after 5 a.m. on the 400 block of West 79th Street near Vincennes Avenue, and by 6:25 a.m. crews reported that roughly half the roof was gone. No injuries were reported, and firefighters worked to keep the flames from jumping to a neighboring house.
How crews attacked the blaze
According to CBS Chicago, the Chicago Fire Department quickly elevated the response to a still-and-box alarm to bring in extra equipment and manpower, then went into a "surround-and-drown" operation, pouring water from tower ladders to knock down stubborn hot spots. Firefighters also soaked a nearby residence to keep the fire from spreading. The CFD logged the initial call shortly after 5 a.m.
Fire history at 79th and Vincennes
The 79th-and-Vincennes corridor has seen big fires before. In May 2020, a three-alarm blaze destroyed a grocery at 400 W. 79th Street and displaced nearby residents, according to Block Club Chicago. CFD media posts archived by Chicago-area fire trackers document earlier still-and-box and multi-alarm responses at the same corner, underscoring how quickly flames can move along tightly packed commercial blocks.
Aftermath and what's next
Per CBS Chicago, the one-story commercial strip held four storefronts but was reported completely vacant when the fire broke out, and by midmorning crews had the situation controlled enough to concentrate on remaining hot spots. With half the roof gone, the structure was left in ruins, but authorities still had not reported any injuries. The Chicago Fire Department has not yet released information on a cause and is expected to investigate once the scene is fully secured.
Neighbors and commuters along the busy 79th Street corridor should plan for lingering smoke and possible street closures as investigators and crews finish overhaul and cleanup work. We will update this space as officials release more details.
