A man was shot and seriously injured on Interstate 85 south in Charlotte, and police say it appears he was targeted in a random attack that turned an ordinary drive into a crime scene.
Charlotte-Mecklenburg police said the victim was rushed to a hospital with serious injuries after officers responded to reports of shots fired along I-85 south. Detectives described the shooting as random and said they are actively searching for whoever pulled the trigger. As of Monday night, no arrests had been announced, and investigators released only limited details about a possible suspect or motive.
According to WCNC, officers found the wounded man after responding to calls about gunfire on the interstate. The station reported that detectives canvassed the area for witnesses and video evidence and reiterated that the case is being treated as a random shooting.
Police appeal for tips
CMPD is asking anyone who was driving through the area or who may have captured something on a phone or dash camera to come forward. Per the Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department, anyone with information is urged to call 704-432-TIPS (8477) or leave an anonymous tip with Charlotte Crime Stoppers.
How this fits a pattern
The I-85 corridor has seen its share of trouble in recent years, keeping highway safety on the minds of Charlotte drivers. Local outlets previously reported a 2023 shooting into a rideshare vehicle on I-85, as WSOC documented, and earlier incidents that led to arrests were covered by WBTV.
CMPD said the investigation remains active and that additional information will be released as it becomes available. This story will be updated if police share new details or announce an arrest.
