One person was killed and another was taken to the hospital after a two-vehicle crash on Route 23 (Marietta Avenue) in West Hempfield Township on Monday morning, authorities said. Emergency crews pronounced one driver dead at the scene and transported the other to a nearby hospital after the collision, which happened just after 10:20 a.m. The crash shut down a stretch of Marietta Avenue for several hours while crews worked, backing up traffic and slowing drivers across that part of Lancaster County.
What Police Say Happened
West Hempfield Township police told reporters the vehicles collided at the intersection of Marietta Avenue (Route 23) and Bridge Valley Road at about 10:22 a.m., and that each vehicle had only its driver inside, according to Daily Voice. One driver was pronounced dead at the scene, while the other was taken to a nearby hospital, and officials said the surviving driver's condition was not immediately available. Officers and EMS attempted life-saving measures on scene, police said.
Investigation And Road Closures
The Lancaster County Crash Team and the county coroner's office were called in to investigate the cause of the collision, and Marietta Avenue was shut down in both directions between Raintree Road and Jasmine Place for an extended period, according to WGAL. Officials said the roadway would stay closed while investigators documented the scene and collected evidence. Authorities have not yet released the name of the driver who died.
A Heavily Traveled Stretch Of Route 23
Marietta Avenue forms part of Pennsylvania Route 23, a busy east-west corridor where PennDOT has carried out interchange and resurfacing work in recent years, underscoring its importance as both a local and commuter route. District records point to projects at the Centerville Road interchange and other Route 23 improvements in Lancaster County, according to the Pennsylvania Department of Transportation. Monday's closure near the crash site added another traffic headache to a roadway that already carries plenty of daily congestion.
Investigation Still Ongoing
Police have not released the name of the person who died and say the investigation remains active, with no immediate determination of what caused the crash, according to Daily Voice. The Lancaster County Crash Team and the county coroner's office are continuing their work. Officials have not provided additional information about the hospitalized driver's condition.
